INTRODUCTION TO GERIATRIC NURSING.

GERIATRICS
Geriatrics is the branch of science that studies in older patients clinical, therapeutic and social aspects.
In geriatrics a comprehensive assessment of the elderly is done.
In Spain it is a specialty that you can choose when you finish the degree, and nursing professionals are very well prepared to understand and to help geriatric patients.

Geriatric Nursing is part of nursing that is responsible of the assessment, planning, application of nursing care for the elderly to satisfy their needs, and evaluation of the effectiveness of such care in achieving and maintaining a level of well-being consistent with the constraints imposed by the aging process. The unique word for care of the elderly, referred to care to ill or institutionalized elderly.
Specialized care is the care, diagnostic, therapeutic and rehabilitation activities fulfillment. As well as all health promotion, health education and disease prevention activities.
It includes specialized ambulatory care visits, in admission hospitalization and emergency hospital care.
It seems obvious that care professionals specialized in geriatrics are highly qualified. But are hospital services more effective for the elderly geriatrics than the non-skilled care?
According to a study in which the effectiveness of specialized care designed to improve the health of the elderly want to be known, geriatric care is effective and efficient. To do this a comprehensive assessment applied within a comprehensive multidisciplinary team must be made.
